Choosing the right fencing for the winter conditions to avoid damage

With days getting shorter and freezing conditions ahead of us, it is now is a good time to check if your fence will hold up to the winter months ahead.

Quality Fence Posts

Quality fencing posts are a must, poor fencing posts are often the reason to why some fences struggle with the winter weather conditions.

Using bad quality timber fence posts can often cause fences to lean with strong winds and rain.

Fences which lean to an angle are often caused with the fence post being damaged.

Damage to fence posts is often caused by rotting at ground level and the fence being weakened due to the poor quality of the timber fence posts used.

When selecting fence posts always use high quality timber posts, which are pressure treated,

set the fence posts to 2ft/200mm deep into the ground this needs to be done for them to be secure.

Giving your Fence posts a little maintenance can go a long way.

Concrete fence posts are also another option as they avoid rotting are stronger and also require a lot less maintenance.

Non-rust materials

Along with using high quality fence panels, posts and gravel boards you may also want to thing about the quality of the fixings. Quality nails and screws are also a must, they should be galvanised and made from stainless steel, if they are not, it will cause rusting over the years.

Not only do rusty nails look very bad, they leave a brown trail on the actual nail when the metal oxidises. In additon, you will find that poorer fixings often fail which can cause the fence panels to come apart or snap. So to sum up it is as  important to have just as good fixings and the materials you use.

Choosing the correct fencing

When looking to choose your fencing, you should pick something which accommodates the surroundings. If your property is more open and known for strong winds, then it is best to opt for fencing panels that offer wind resistance.
