Farming Gates (Metal or Timber)
For all of the farmers or residents on a farm reading this blog today, we’re sure you’ve become familiar with all of the different types of gates for farms. Gates can be a primary source of security on a farm and ensuring that they are secure and suitable is something that is important for every farmer.
When choosing what gate to select for your farm, the material may be an element you debate the most. There are pros and cons to both metal and timber gates, so were here to give you the rundown on both!
Timer gates
The pros:
- Very cost effective. Timber is relatively inexpensive in comparison to metal gates.
- It keeps the ‘natural’ look to your farm. This can keep your farm having a homely countryside feel.
- It is maintainable and adaptable. Wooden gates can be painted and repaired fairly easily meaning that repairs can be quite effective.
- These gates can be cut very easily to fit into any sizes and shapes to fit your farm best.
The Cons:
- They are prone to breaking at weak points and can be easy victims of weathering processes.
Metal gates
The pros:
- Keeps livestock safe in a secure structure they will struggle to break through.
- Durable and long lasting material.
- Easy to maintain.
- Fairly simple to install and change when upgrades are due
The cons:
- Made from heavy material which can make them unsuitable for hanging.
- Can be more pricey than timber alternatives.
There’s no right answer to which gate is the better choice, this all comes down to your personal preference. It is most commonly found that those most concerned for the security of their farm opt towards metal gates while this with aesthetics at the front of their mind choose timber.
